10CFR50.44 Amendment
The requirements for Combustible Gas Control In Containment have been changed as of October 2003. Meggitt Safety Systems has reviewed the amended 10CFR 50.44 Rule and concluded the following:
- The Amended Rule retains the requirement for CAMS Hydrogen (and Oxygen for Inerted Containment) measurement(s).
- The Amended Rule relaxes the existing requirement for the CAMS hydrogen and oxygen for inerted containments measurement.
CAM Hydrogen Analyzers - Downgrade from 1.97 Safety Class Category 1 to Category 3. The analyzer may be procured as a commercial grade item. Warm up time has been extended from 30 minutes to 90 minutes (excluding time to calibrate).
CAM Oxygen Analyzers - Downgrade from 1.97 Safety Class Category 1 to Category 2. Note that Revision 3 of Reg. Guide 1.97 continues to retain the requirement for environmental qualification of Category 2 equipment per 1.89. The analyzer may be procured as a commercial grade item. Warm up time has been extended from 30 minutes to 90 minutes (excluding time to calibrate).
Operability - The functional requirement for the analyzer is that it operate correctly and continuously following a "beyond design basis accident". 10 CFR 50.44 as amended requires hydrogen and oxygen monitors to be maintained reliable and functional.
Relief – Areas of significant relief provided by the amended rule are:
- Removes analyzers from the technical specification.
- Seismic qualification is no longer required.
- Relieves documentation burden including detailed equipment traceability.
